Depression and Joy | Longmont Mental Health Therapist and Life Coach

When struggling with depression, joy can feel difficult to find.

It often appears in simple, everyday moments—a loved one’s smile, the scent of blooming flowers, a shared laugh, or the satisfaction of creative expression. These moments may be brief, but they are real and meaningful—and they matter, especially in the midst of depression.

For many, though, joy can be difficult to access or sustain. It’s common to downplay positive experiences—out of fear of seeming boastful, worry about vulnerability, or anxiety that joy won’t last. Sometimes there’s even discomfort in feeling good when others are struggling.

But when we minimize joy, we also limit our emotional capacity. Ignoring joy can leave us feeling disconnected from what is meaningful and sustaining in life.

Recognizing and allowing space for joy doesn’t diminish pain—it offers balance. Emotional well-being requires space for both.

Joy is not about denying hardship; it’s about allowing light to exist alongside it.
