The First Stages of Creative Rhythm
Whether we are creating art or life, the first stages of any process have similar components. Anxiety, apprehension, self-doubt, insecurity, excitement, fear, energy, and containment are just a few of the emotions that come up at the beginning of an new endeavor or process.
Resistance – Often mistaken for procrastination, resistance is actually a form of preparation. It’s the body and mind making space. Attending to what arises without rushing creates a natural opening.
Initial Stroke Excitement – Beginnings are full of energy. Nothing is yet at risk. Every mark or choice feels like possibility. This early freedom lays the emotional groundwork for what follows.
The Fear of Messing Up – As attachment deepens, so does fear. The more meaningful something becomes, the more vulnerable we feel. Doubt creeps in. This fear is a sign that something matters.
Build Structure – As momentum shifts, structure becomes necessary. Boundaries help hold intensity and allow deeper engagement. In life, as in art, structure contains emotional energy.
Free Working – With structure in place, exploration becomes more intuitive. There’s room to play, to trust instinct, and to fall quietly in love with the process.
